Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin

Liz is dead. She died from a taxi collision and wakes up on a boat. Her family is not with her. She learns that when she died she got transferred to the world of the dead, aka Elsewhere. She has to live her life in death as she gets over her grief of leaving her family. I wouldn't give away much about this book because this book will keep your hands and eyes stuck to it.
This book has an interesting plot dealing with her life in Elsewhere. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes exotic books about death.

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Graceling is about a girl named Katsa who finds that she has been born with a special Grace - killing. In the land where Katsa lives, those who are Graced are feared and sent to the king to use in his army. Katsa is no different. King Randa sends her, Oll, and Giddon out on missions to kill people in his kingdom. Throughout the book, she meets a Leinid named Prince Greening, or Po, who is also Graced. Katsa decides, with Po's help, that she will no longer listen to Randa. They leave his court together and face many challenges while trying to figure out who had kidnaped a Leinid grandfather. After facing King Leck, Po and Katsa are forced to be separated, even though there is a possibility Po could die.
